Have Food, Will Cycle

The lovely view that beckoned at Qian Hai (前海)

We have heard that cycling around Beijing can be really fun and accessible while one cannot possibly claim to be a true Beijinger without a proper bicycle to call our own. Hence, when our friend suggested a Hutong expedition to Nanluoguxiang with a Yunnan dinner to boot, we foolishly readily agreed even though it would be a 21 km journey (one way) and neither of us owned a bicycle (at that point in time).

Although we very nearly didn't make it since there was a thunderstorm an hour before our departure, the inclement weather cleared just in time. Thank goodness too for the rains which made the weather so much cooler to cycle in. Us happy campers were really looking forward to doing something different other than our usual happy bellies escapades.

While it was initially alittle nerve wrecking to navigate our way through traffic and avoid being knocked down, this trip made me appreciate Beijing so much more as I saw the touristy sights through a different lens. With the sun rays hitting the ancient walls and the history-laden alleyways a sheer delight to ride in, this was the first time I actually felt that Beijing was beautiful.

Our numerous pit stops and photo taking opportunities...

A quaint Yunnan place that was a great respite after 3 hours of intensive (by my standards) cycling...

My favourites for the night: pineapple sticky rice and roasted brinjal (earlier picture)

It's strange to have such an "a-ha" moment one year after living in this city. Converted cycling enthusiasts that we are, this has opened up a whole new world for us and we are really excited at the prospect of uncovering more of this city on our brand new nifty set of wheels.

Hooray to more cycling adventures. =)
