Ramen from Champions

Since July this year, there has been an ongoing Ramen Championship at Iluma@Bugis as 6 best ramen places in Japan come together to compete for the title, "Ultimate Ramen Champion 2011".

As I contemplated whether this was merely hype or a valid cause to support, finally caved in to my love for ramen and headed on down for a taste test.

Verdict: The ramen was above average at best and definitely not a Purpose-of-Visit driver. While this would not replace my usual favourite haunts: Tampopo and hole-in-the-walls at Robertson Quay.

My bowl from Hakata Ikkousha, known for its thinner noodles nestled within its pork-based broth. The chicken gyoza was nothing to shout about.

Gantetsu offers miso-based ramen with a generous dollop of butter and loads of corn.  Once again, while it was OK, don't recall any heart-stopping, gastronomic defining moment for my friend.

Even though I like the idea behind this competition, can't say that this would motivate me enough to return and try all the other stalls. However, if you like a hearty bowl of ramen, head on down and make your vote count!
