Local Pursuits

"There is no love sincerer than the love of food."
- George Bernard Shaw

I have been craving for bak chor mee ever since my first foray to a grimy coffeeshop in Macpherson for what else but Macpherson Bak Chor Mee. While I have heard Ed rave about it on occasion, it was nice to finally get to try this for myself. After all that hype, am pleased to announce that it was worth every msg-laden drop what with the generous ingredients, tasty mushrooms within a lovely broth.

While ieatishootipost had commented on the strong "kee" smell of the noodles, I was quite happy with the consistency and taste. What I really appreciated too was the ability to separate the soup from the dry noodles (for $4.50 order) so that one can maximise the goodness of the soup with stirred in egg to boot. *slurps*

Separated noodles and soup filled with oodles of goodness while the ngoh hiang from a neighbouring coffeeshop was a great appetizer while we waited. *beams*

Subsequently, I recalled my childhood memory of eating Bak Chor Mee at a stall along Hill Street, which had subsequently moved to Marina Square foodcourt before ending up at a coffeeshop in Crawford Lane. Thus, it was with great delight when I managed to uncover this stall once again after scouring around various food blogs.

True to its reputation, there was a queue when we arrived but thankfully, the wait wasn't the expected 45 minutes (or more) and we managed to tuck into piping hot noodles within 30 minutes of our arrival. Honestly, my memory of this seemed to be alot better. *disappointed sniffs*

While it was good enough, I wasn't particularly impressed especially with the noodles which were alittle too hard. Broth wise, the Macpherson one was definitely better (especially with the egg!).

While it was nice to re-visit my childhood mee pok memory, the lamb chop at the Western stall, same coffeeshop left a deeper impresson.

As I continue my quest for that calorie-worthy bowl of Bak Chor Mee, all suggestions are welcomed!
